"We formed North London Brass in 2010 because we wanted to regenerate and revitalise grass-roots brass banding in our North London communities. It's going well." - (Martyn Stogden - Director)
Alan is a member of our Board of Reference for North London Brass and BSM Foundation Bands. Alan is one of Britain's most respected brass band Conductors.
Alan, a native of Aberdeen, attended The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, studying composition with Dr Gordon McPherson and Rory Boyle and conducting with Alasdair Mitchell. In 2001, Alan won the Scottish heat of the NABBC Conductor Competition, going on to represent Scotland at the NABBC finals in 2003. More recently, Alan reached the quarter final of the 2011 European Conductor Competition in Montreux.
Alan has worked with a number of bands in the UK and overseas, including the Bon-Accord Silver Band, Kingdom Brass, Brassage Brassband, Aarhus Brass Band and Tokyo Brass Concord. From 2006-2013 he was the musical director of Regent Brass, presiding over a very successful period which saw the band rise to the Championship Section, being crowned the London & Southern Counties Champions in 2013 and representing the south-east at the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall.
Alan is working with North London Brass and our BSM Foundation to help encourage and promote grassroots community brass banding. We feel priveleged and honoured to be working with Alan in this way and in his capacity as Musical Director of one of our Region's most successful Championship Bands.
John is Musical Director for our North London Brass Staff Band, formed in 2014 to provide a flagship project for the Network, aiming to provide brass banding at the highest level possible within our structure. John is also a member of our Board of Reference.
John is multi-talented as a composer, arranger, conductor, trombonist, clarinettist, saxophonist and percussionist. He is familiar to many brass and wind players in London for his excellent work with Lambeth Wind Orchestra, the London Consort of Winds Clarinet Choir and through his brass playing and conducting with Regent Community Brass. leading them to promotion from Fourth to Third Contesting Section in the London & Southern Counties Region.
John has helped to bring about numerous pieces of new music as a commissioner through BASBWE and other external organisations, ensuring that the focus stays on making music within the community. In 2010, he worked on a community event with Norwood School in collaboration with Lambeth Wind Orchestra and the Southbank Centre as part of the Bernstein Project, writing a new piece of music theatre with the students and band that was performed in the Clore Ballroom.
Currently, John is working alongside the composer Stephen McNeff as co-commissioner of a brand new work for Flute and Band, specifically designed with amateur players in mind.
Martyn is Founder and Director of North London Brass. His vision is to develop a new infrastructure, a family of local brass bands across the 'villages' of North London and beyond.
He believes that each town deserves its own 'town band' and that the musicians and budding musicians of London should have just as much opportunity to enjoy traditional brass banding as those in the flourishing banding communities in other parts of the country.
Rather than being seen as an ailing or dying art, Martyn believes that brass banding is capable of thriving again and adding something cohesive and uniting in the diverse and sometimes fragmented communities of our capital city. There is something uniquely 'British' about British brass banding, something that rises above cultural or generational differences, trends and fashions and just tugs at your soul with 'that sound'.
Martyn plays a range of brass instruments (with varying degrees of success) and works as a professional jazz pianist, teacher and Musical Director. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree with Music & Literature and was born and bred in North London.
Four Hills Music
Four Hills Music is the organisation that runs and supports North London Brass and other fantastic community music projects in the area. North London Brass currently has bases in Enfield, Muswell Hill, Putney, Southgate, Westminster and the Barbican in the City of London.
Founded in 2007, our stable currently includes North London Brass, ENJO English Jazz Orchestra (www.englishjazzorchestra.co.uk), London People's Orchestra (www.londonpeoplesorchestra.co.uk) and North London Singers. We regularly work with over 220 musicians through our weekly projects.
All of our projects are inclusive, work with people of all age groups, encourage diversity and collaboration and put up no obstacles or barriers - we meet people where they are with their music studies and take them to places they've never dreamed about.
Many of our players have discovered new skills and interests; most have made new friendships and have found new routes to express themselves creatively through music.
